"Coming from Kolkata, I really wanted to see how the coffee house vibe in Chandigarh stood - wasn't disappointed at all. Similar crowd . Busy in their own 'adda' .. The food was decent enough. Never had mutton dosa before!"
"The Indian Coffee House in Chandigarh is less of a cafe and more of a cultural institution. Located in the heart of the city's main plaza, it serves as a "time capsule" that has remained largely unchanged since the 1960s.
Here is a summary for your visit:
The Vibe & Atmosphere
Stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. The high ceilings, humming ceiling fans, and simple furniture create an unpretentious, intellectual atmosphere.
Old-World Charm: Waiters still wear the iconic white uniforms with fan-crested turbans (pugarees) and green cummerbunds.
Crowd: It is a hub for a diverse mix of people—from retired bureaucrats and journalists debating politics to college students looking for a budget-friendly meal.
Nostalgia over Luxury: Do not expect modern cafe aesthetics or plush seating. The appeal lies in its rustic, buzzing, and communal feel.
What to Order
The menu is extensive and incredibly affordable, focusing on South Indian staples and classic British-Indian snacks.
South Indian Classics: The Masala Dosa and Vada Sambhar are the go-to orders for most patrons.
Filter Coffee: Served in traditional cups, it is strong, milky, and the signature item you must try.
Snacks: The Mutton Cutlets, French Toast, and Cheese Omelette are popular savory options if you want something other than South Indian food.
Cold Coffee: Their cold coffee is distinctly old-school—creamy and sweet, often served in a glass bottle or tall glass.
Practical Information
Location: Indian Coffee House is located at SCO 12, near Neelam Cinema in Sector 17-E.
Hours: Open daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Service: Service is fast and efficient, though it can be brisk. It’s part of the charm!
Visitor Tip: Go for the experience of "slow living." It’s a place to sit for hours with a book or a conversation without the pressure to leave. The food is decent and cheap, but the real flavor comes from the history and the people-watching."

Management is also good.
Usually this place is full and it's hard to get a seat here as mostly senior citizens are sitting they are having coffee etc and are enjoying their old memories.
Some people from mncs and other companies are also seen here doing their official work etc
